Reducing the walls of Chronic Conflict by combining TOC and the Dignity Model - Presented by Steven Holt

The TOC approach to resolving Chronic Conflict assumes one party will initiate action and the other party will react cooperatively. But in true chronic conflict there may be decades of emotional baggage making either of those actions unlikely or unsuccessful. 

Dr. Donna Hicks of Harvard University worked in areas of high conflict around the world for 25 years and created a model to explain why chronic conflicts perpetuate. Her model is based on the inherent dignity of human beings and our intensely emotional reactions to being devalued or considered of little worth. She refers to these as dignity violations.Her Dignity Model proposes a means to use knowledge of dignity and dignity violations to help resolve conflicts between individuals or groups. 

The TOC approach to resolving chronic conflict has an excellent logical method, but is missing the emotional link. Dr. Hicks’ method has a way to use the emotional link but is missing the logical approach to resolve the conflict.  This presentation shows that by combining the two approaches we can come up with a more successful and more effective means of resolving Chronic Conflicts between individuals, organizations, business units, or companies. And it suggests a means of making the Dignity Model more effective in both business and non-business environments.

About the Presenter:

Steven C. Holt has been in management and engineering with Boeing in Seattle for 40 years. During that time he has had the opportunity to study and practice a number of continuous improvement disciplines such as Total Quality Management, Systems Thinking, TRIZ, Lean, and the Theory of Constraints.

He received his initial TOC training through Washington State University in 1997 and holds a Constraints Management Certificate from WSU, He has been a member of TOCICO since 2003. Steve is TOCICO certified in Project Management and was on the TOCICO Board of Directors from 2010 to 2016. His primary focus is the application of TOC and related studies in the management of complex product development programs.
