wanting to continue in a management role when she started a family, Roberts
moved into education where she was fortunate enough to be mentored by one of
the world’s leading authorities on Yygotsky, Galina Dolya.
Dolya’s tutorage, Roberts discovered what she always suspected was missing in
much of main stream British education; a holistic, child centred approach. Dolya’s schools valued high academic
achievement but understood this was best achieved developing the whole child,
(through the arts, philosophy and culture as well as higher ordered thinking
skills such as logic). It was here that
Roberts was introduced to TOC.
resonated deeply with Roberts and within a few years Roberts had created and
was running her own TOC thinking skills programmes for children and
parents. The programmes were so
effective that parents were keen for Roberts to set up a Saturday School so
their children could continue benefitting from her teaching. And thus, the
Indigo Academy was born.
the Academy, Roberts became increasingly aware of the benefits of TOC for those
with high-functioning Aspergers.
came to the attention of the statutory agencies, and started working with the
police, creating programmes for them to use with disaffected youths and their
families in relation to self- esteem and alcohol misuse.
recently Roberts has completed a year’s formal research into her original TOC
programme that combined TOC with story to develop student’s conflict resolution
skills and enhance behaviour management.
This programme is now the subject of an academic book to be published later
this year through Optimus Education.
