Foundation Grants Program Update:
of Constraints: A Research Data Base
The TOCICO is honored to present to the TOCICO world
community the ongoing, exceptional accomplishments of Prof. Vicky Mabin,
Professor of Management at Victoria Business School, and Maryam Mirzaei, PhD
Researcher at Victoria Business School, in Wellington, New Zealand.
Vicky and Maryam have spent countless hours researching and
assembling the Theory of Constraints: A
Research Data Base.
A Bit of History:
Over the last 30 years there has been much interest and research using Dr
Eliyahu M. Goldratt's Theory of Constraints (TOC).
TOC has led to dramatic improvements in factories, hospitals, projects,
government departments – in fact, it has been applied to almost every area of
human endeavor and the Theory of Constraints International Certification
Organization (TOCICO) portals demonstrate thiswide-ranging
Because of this wide applicability, papers have been published in a variety
of journals, under many different disciplines and application areas.
We felt there was a need to find out what research others have done, so we
can avoid 'reinventing the wheel' and build on each other's advances to
progress TOC more rapidly.
However, scholars and researchers can find it pretty hard to locate these
papers with searches on terms as general as 'theory', 'constraints', and 'TOC'!
This database of TOC articles, books and conference papers was started back
in 1996, with its first bibliography published in 2000 by Vicky Mabin and
Steven Balderstone. It now covers over 30 years of TOC history. The full
database was refined manually selecting any publications that either debate or
improve elements of TOC or describe applications of the method, and the items
were then categorized.
Vicky and Maryam have recently searched the literature again
and updated their records, which are now current through 2015. They have
assembled over 4000 articles, books, and conference papers, on all areas of
TOC. The database contains journal articles and conference papers, to
complement the listing of TOC books compiled by Prof Jim Cox, which
is available on the TOCICO website
Constraints: A Research Database has four categories:
Chain Project Management (CCPM)
- Thinking Processes
- Throughput Accounting and
- Supply Chain and Operations Management
This evolving database will be published via regularly updated spreadsheets
that build on the great work done to date, and available as a downloadable
resource for researchers and practitioners alike.
The Theory of Constraints (TOC) Research Database aims to
support collaboration between researchers and practitioners in the field and
includes downloadable spreadsheets containing details of thousands of TOC
publications including journal articles and papers from conference proceedings,
bibliographical details, abstracts and links to online resources for each item,
and copies of papers are included where possible.
The TOC Database is searchable, allowing you to locate a
particular item of interest and can be used to:
with researchers on TOC – related topics
with people who are published on TOC
what others have found using TOC
what has been published on TOC so you can use it to help you in your work
where TOC has been applied
Vicky and Maryam are enthusiastic about the
possibility of collaborative research, so please get in touch to discuss
the options by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Critical Funding for completion of the work on this TOC
Database was provided by the generous support of the Goldratt Foundation and
the Victoria University of Wellington.
