CONFERENCE SUBMISSION FORMATS
The language of all conference sessions is English.
Presentation sessions
A 90-minute session features three 30-minute presentations. Each 30-minute session includes a facilitated discussion and question and answer opportunities as time allows.
Workshops
Workshops provide a hands-on learning experience for participants and will be assigned a 90-minute session. Please note whether your workshop focuses on basic, intermediate or advanced TOC knowledge.
Hyde Park
Hyde Park sessions are modeled on the experience one may get at the famous Speaker’s Corner on the boundary of London’s Hyde Park. There, anybody may talk about any lawful subject. A Hyde Park session is 30 minutes long with a limit of 7 minutes of prepared speech on a controversial TOC-related subject. The remaining balance of the 30 minutes is expected to be a facilitated discussion with the attendees.

Submissions must include a detailed abstract containing the following:
  • The provocative point to be discussed in 5-7 minutes
  • A counter – point argument statement – why will someone argue with you?
  • The presenter will provide a conflict cloud that the provocative statement is intended to resolve. This will aid in enhancing the discussion
Case Studies
A case study will describe an application or implementation at a specific, named organization and may only be submitted if at least one of the authors is a representative of that organization and if that person agrees to (co-) present at the TOCICO conference. Case studies may be assigned 45 or 60 minutes per session. The Conference Submission Review Committee will make this determination.

Submission abstracts and presentations must follow the 5 Step process stated above and also include:
  • A focus on presenting their sustainability strategies and tactics, now and in the future.
  • What were the lessons learned? This point should include successes, challenges, and obstacles and how they were overcome.
The TOCICO reserves the right to withdraw case studies from the program if the organization representative is not registered by August 1, 2016 or is not present at the conference.
Technology: Technology companies are invited to present the concepts of their technological solutions.
Eli Goldratt provided us with the six questions specific to any technology:"solution – from "Necessary But Not Sufficient": Technology can bring benefits if, and only if, it diminishes a limitation.”
Submissions for technology presentations must answer the following six questions:
  1. What is the power of the new technology?
  2. What current limitation does the new technology eliminate or vastly reduce?
  3. What policies, norms, measurements and behaviors are used today to bypass the above limitation?
  4. What policies, norms and behaviors should be used once the new technology is in place?
  5. Do the new rules require any change in the way we use the technology?
  6. How to cause the change?
Technology presentations must not be marketing for company software specific products or services.
New Knowledge and Research (Presentation and Publication)

This track represents presentations (and supporting manuscripts) describing major contributions to the TOC Body of Knowledge. The presentation time is 60 minutes to include discussion, question and answers.

New Knowledge presentations must follow the Standing on the Shoulders of Giants (SOTSOG) process:

The concept behind SOTSOG:

The fundamental belief that we are working with in the Standing On the Shoulders of Giants process is that knowledge is infinite. It’s the recognition, understanding and the conviction that says the bigger more solid the base of the knowledge that we are standing on, the higher the jump in performance is available to us.

If we know the potential huge jump in performance of the area being addressed, just because we have established a bigger and broader base of knowledge, how do we find it? 

  1. Identify a "giant” not a choopchick. - Intuition will guide you - It needs to be an important enough subject for you.
  2. Identify the enormity of the area not addressed by the giant. - Reality gives the signals so much more can be done based on what has already been achieved. - You are aiming for a broader, not more confined, area than what was addressed by the giant.
  3. Get on the giant’s shoulders. - Gain the historic perspective - understand the giant’s solution better than he did.
  4. Identify the conceptual difference between the reality that was improved so dramatically by the giant, and the area untouched.
  5. Identify the wrong assumption - Valid in the area it worked – not valid in the area where it doesn’t.
  6. Conduct a full analysis to determine the core problem, solution, etc.

Examples of presentations might be: A summarization and extrapolation of existing non-profit performance measurement applications to a general performance measurement model for nonprofit organizations; an analysis linking several different supply chain applications to the generic supply chain strategy and tactics tree describing the various changes in assumptions and injections to accommodate different product, market, industry, etc. characteristics. 

The objective of this track is to identify new theoretical models assimilating the knowledge gained from individual case studies. 

An initial abstract should provide the following: 

  • What is the new knowledge?
  • What is the impact of the new knowledge to the existing accepted strategy and tactic trees?
